Start with a major focus area of inspiration that should influence all your decision making Ask each other questions about how this major focus could be interpreted in costumes, set, props, etc.

Background Research: Helps you understand what you are looking for.  Use places like Wikipedia and Google for this type of search, then use library resources for final references.

Primary Sources and secondary sources depend heavily on time and who created the document.

Time: Created when the event occurs Created after the event occurs
Author/Creator: Eyewitness to historical event Not an eyewitness, may have heard testimony from an eyewitness
